Just before Upgradation

  • Google offers factory images for download and you need to have a Windows or Mac PC for this process of upgradation. So, keep a laptop aside.
  • As this process is more for an advanced user, that doesn’t mean others won’t. This method of upgradation will erase all your data in your handset so, take backup of everything. I mean all your contacts, files, videos, music files and everything.

If you didn’t find developer options option, go to Settings-> About Phone and then tap on build number for 8 times. Then you can see the Developer options option under settings.

  • Go to Developer options and enable OEM unlocking and then after switch off your Nexus device.
  • Then long press Volume Down and Power button to enter Fast boot menu. Then connect your Nexus Device to the computer using micro USB cable.
  • Now, in the computer go to the ADB tools folder and press Shift+Right click and select Open Command Window here
  • This will open the Command Window. Then in the command Window type “fastboot oem unlock” and press enter.
  • Then it will ask you to confirm the action. You can confirm it by pressing the Volume Up key followed by Power button in your Nexus Device.
  • This will unlock the boot loader and everything on your phone would have erased and now you need to perform the upgradation.

  • Now extract the factory image (Use 7Zip software) and keep all the files in the folder where the ADB tools are present. I mean Place all the extracted files and ADB tools in same folder.
  • Now, start the nexus device in Fastboot mode by long pressing the Volume Down and Power button at a time.
  • In the computer, you need to run flash-all.bat file. This can be done by just double clicking flash-all.bat file.
  • Now, your Nexus device will automatically reboot and will take you to the welcome page.

If you get an error dialog window like missing system.img, then follow this below process

  • You need to extract all the files in the .zip file (you will find it after extracting the tar/tgz file). You can find a bunch of .img files. You will also find the bootloader and radio image files after extracting the tar/tgz file. Place all the .img files in the ADB tools folder that is the parent directory where the bootloader and radio image files are present.
  • Then after run these commands in the command window one by one in the same order.

fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-file-name.img

fastboot flash radio radio-file-name.img

  • After executing the above two commands, you need to reboot the boot-loader, just run this command to reboot:

fastboot reboot-bootloader

  • Now you can move on to the rest of the files:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img

Finally just reboot your device and You will have Android 6.0 Marshmallow in your Nexus Device.
